Online Education for Professionals

Escrito el 22 septiembre 2014 por entrepreneurship en emprender

a post by Fernando Dal Re, cofounder of Pupilum*

Education is the most powerful weapon one can use to change the world.

Nelson Mandela

Education is mandatory for the first few years of our lives, and then it is not uncommon to keep on studying until your mid twenties. After that, we spend around forty years working, where learning happens, at its best, on the job. Yet science and technology are continuously evolving and demand us new skills and abilities to meet with the requirements that these innovations carry with them.

¿But how can we update our knowledge if we spend most part of our days, and lives, working?

First, we must reckon that education is something we need to keep working on continuously, and then, we have to find the time for it to happen and a solution that fits in our demanding schedules.

Online Education is a great solution for that problem. With online education you can study wherever you are, whenever fits best for you, at your own pace, and even at a fraction of the cost of traditional offline education. It is true however, that online education is still behind traditional offline education in many aspects, but it is true too, that new technology is helping close the gap at a fast rate.

As a symptom of this, in 2014, global Ed Tech financing has reached at peak. Now you can learn design, web development or photography for as little as 25$ a month with Lynda.com, attend online classes from World’s top universities for free at Coursera.org, subscribe to a year long course of English for just 20€ at Busuu.com or land a job at the best companies in Silicon Valley by completing one of their courses at Udacity.com.

You only need to decide what you want to learn, devote some time a week for learning and invest little money compared to what you will obtain from it.

A path to follow: Continuing Medical Education

The fields of medicine and science never stop moving forward, and neither do health care professionals. In fact, doctors know that what they learn at university only accounts for 2% of the knowledge they use in their clinical practice throughout their careers. As for the other 98%, they must learn it on a continuous basis.

Continuing Medical Education (CME) is the tool doctors and other healthcare professionals use in order to stay up to date in their specialties.

A recent poll conducted by Neomed to more than 2.000 doctors in Spain showed that, on average, doctors spend over 120 hours of their time a year completing CME courses. And there was no relevant distinction in the time invested by doctors in their thirties to doctors in their fifties. Doctors are the perfect example of lifelong learners.

But just like any other professional, doctors have demanding schedules that allow little spare time within the job to devote to learning. They are used to invest their free time, usually from their weekends, to assist to courses held in hospitals and congresses that, in most occasions, are out from their hometowns. The majority of the CME courses available today are still being held offline, which makes them expensive and time consuming. This is a real pain for doctors, professionals that are busier than ever, splitting their time among work, family and Continuing Medical Education.

At Pupilum, we are offering online CME courses that enable doctors to study at their own pace, whenever they want and wherever they are. We partner with top notch medical teams to deliver courses in cardiology, pediatrics, psychiatry, dermatology, allergology and infectious diseases within many others. All our courses have official accreditation, which makes them accountable for the professional development of our students. If you think of doctors as the perfect example of lifelong learners, we want Pupilum to be their first choice when looking to update their medical education.

Final thoughts

At a time when youth unemployment is at its peak, and the skills that new jobs demand are many times not met by the skills most people have, continuing education is the most powerful tool we have to make an impact and advance in our careers. Where pressing schedules and scarce resources try to distract us from gaining new knowledge, online education offers a perfect solution to both problems. It is now easier and cheaper than ever to update our education and become lifelong learners. If you don’t trust me…ask your doctor.

What level of financial literacy is needed to become an entrepreneur?

Escrito el 17 septiembre 2014 por entrepreneurship en emprender

What level of financial literacy is needed to become an entrepreneur? And to become a successful entrepreneur? International organizations, governments, experts, all argue that we need more of both: entrepreneurship and financial literacy. Could it be that one feeds the other? A new research project of IE Business School (led by Professor Marco Trombetta) is precisely trying to give an answer to these questions.

The aim of the project is to collect data on the level of financial literacy of both entrepreneurs and non-entrepreneurs and compare them. In order to measure the level of financial literacy the research uses a methodology based on a short series of questions to be asked to individuals. A better understanding of the relationship between financial literacy and entrepreneurship will increase our understanding of the factor behind the decision to start a new business and it will potentially help in devising programs to support it properly.

– 2014 Rethink Music Venture Day to be held at The Factory in Berlin on October 24
– Final call for entries to win “business start-up package” worth over $10,000
– Paul Hitchman, MD of Kobalt Label Services, to keynote event

Boston/Paris/Madrid, September 17, 2014 – Berklee College of Music, Midem, and IE Business School are to host the second annual Rethink Music Venture Day in Berlin on Friday October 24, 2014 at the newly launched and widely acclaimed start-up and technology campus: The Factory, in the heart of the German city. Providing a global networking forum with workshops and discussions for international music business start-ups, entrepreneurs, brands and investors, the 2014 Rethink Music Venture Day will welcome Keynote Speaker, Paul Hitchman, Managing Director of Kobalt Label Services as well as other guest speakers.

The Berlin Venture Day will also provide the stage for the final in Rethink Music’s search for 2014’s “next music business entrepreneur”. Entrepreneurs and businesses have until September 29, 2014 to submit their start-up project for the chance to win a “business start-up package” worth over $10,000. Projects must be «investor ready» with a committed team and tested business model. Criteria for assessment will include innovation, team, growth potential, and scalability. A short-list of 12 start-up projects will be selected to pitch their ventures to a panel of judges made up of experienced music executives and investors at the event. Finalists will be notified by October 6, 2014.

The winner will be awarded a ‘business start-up package” comprising $10,000 in legal services through an in-kind donation from Duane Morris, LLP, space in Berklee’s music incubator in Boston, enrolment in an online certificate program from Berkleeonline.com; complimentary registration for Midem 2015; as well as access to investors and capital to launch their new music start-up. Winners of the 2013 Rethink Music Berlin music entrepreneur competition, Berlin start-up company, Nagual Sounds – who also won the Midem Lab 2014 competition – will be presenting and performing at this year’s event, sharing their experiences and exploits since their success at the inaugural 2013 Rethink Music Berlin Venture Day.

“We are excited about returning to Berlin for our second Rethink Music Venture Day and the search for this year’s next generation music business entrepreneur,” commented Allen Bargfrede, executive director of Rethink Music for Berklee College of Music. “We had over 300 start-ups and guests from leading international music and creative companies attending last year – with over 50 entries into our start-up competition – and we expect to grow these numbers this year.”

“Music entrepreneurs and business start-ups have a key role to play in furthering the music industry, not least in delivering new original services to positively impact the ecosystem,” explained Bruno Crolot, Director of Midem & Music Markets. “Our annual Rethink Music Venture Day is designed to provide the forum – and the tools – to assist these entrepreneurs in developing their ideas and ventures into the successful music businesses of tomorrow – and what better place to host this year’s event than The Factory.. a bespoke start-up and technology campus designed to enable entrepreneurs and innovators!”

“With today’s new music industry business models, a Venture Day for startups in music provides a great networking opportunity for music entrepreneurs, brands and investors alike,” said Paris de L’Etraz, Director of the IE Venture Lab. “We are delighted to be partnering with Berklee and Midem once again to merge Rethink Music’s experience in fostering positive change for the future of the music industry with our Venture Day format for the event.” Admission to the Rethink Music 2014 Berlin Venture Day is free with registration.
