Meet the Startups in Area 31: Style Stage

Escrito el 28 mayo 2014 por entrepreneurship en emprender

StyleSage – Big Data meets Fashion

Author: Jade Huang

StyleSage, a New York and Madrid-based company, delivers real-time and predictive analytics through a SaaS platform to fashion retailers and brands. Our technology currently monitors 1000+ retailers, 2000+ brands, and 30M+ products globally. Combining data analyses with business insights from clients, we build beautiful, intuitive charts and reports that are easy to understand and use.

Our vision is to utilize big data to help fashion retailers and brands make some of their most challenging decisions and predict fashion trends.

Why do fashion retailers and brands need your help?

Four questions make or break every fashion business:  What designs would shoppers love?  How much to price merchandise?  How much to produce and stock in stores?  Where to allocate inventory?

Right now, there is no easy way for retailers and brands to gather and analyze the necessary data to complement the decision-making process, and that is where we come in.

Where did you get the idea?

Jade, Jonathan and Robert met last year while at INSEAD during their MBA. Jade had studied fashion design and was looking for Co-Founders to work on an idea at the intersection of fashion and technology.

Initially, we had the idea to build a social platform to allow customers to vote on upcoming fashion collections and use that to predict trends which we developed throughout multiple entrepreneurship courses at school. We had already invested in building an alpha-version of the social voting platform, but soon realized through interviews with fashion professionals that there was no real demand for it.  So we pivoted.

How does the business work?

Our vision of using big data to predict trends and to help fashion professionals is huge and we made the first step towards it already. We have built a web-based platform that visualizes our current data in a very interactive way and we aim to sell that tool to fashion brands and retailers.

In the next year, we will start building an intelligent, predictive model that will be able to give recommendations.

What is the business model?

Our business model is based on SaaS (Software-as-a-Service). We charge a monthly fee for the access to our web-tool, depending on the amount of data and number of user seats. In addition, we plan to release and sell some fashion reports and also discovered some alternative revenue sources.

What kinds of investors does the company have?

Initially, the company operated out of the founder’s fund.  At the moment, we are gearing up to officially raise a seed round.

What is the stage of project now?

We have developed a customer-ready beta product, which we are now testing with major retailers and brands through the New York Fashion Tech Lab. As one of eight startups for the Fashion Tech Lab, we are given unprecedented opportunityto work hand-in-hand with renowned fashion brands and well known entrepreneur mentors. We also hired our first intern as a full-time frontend developer — we are proud and thankful to announce that she came from the Talentum intern program at the IE Area 31 Incubator.

What role do the members play in the company?

We are a very international team, strategically located in New York and Madrid, so we can work easily with retailers and brands from both sides of the Atlantic.photo Ari and Rob

Jade is our CEO, based in New York. She is responsible for Business Development, Marketing, Sales, Fundraising and overall vision of the company. Robert is the CIO, located in Madrid and responsible for product development, technology infrastructure management and data analysis & visualization. Jonathan advises us on key technology and infrastructure decisions. Arianna in Madrid is developing the frontend. Additionally, we have 3 interns in New York supporting us on chart development, product management and data analysis, as well as 2 advisors who provide legal and strategic advice.

Also, we are looking for a senior developer in Madrid with database management and software development experience. If you are interested in the position, please contact us at http://www.stylesage.co/join.html

What have you learned from your experience as entrepreneurs?

It’s an amazing experience to create your own company! It’s so much more than just building a product that works – you are creating whole company, recruiting a team, building a work & fun culture, validating and selling the product, finding investors, navigating legal and administrative topics and so much more.   Don’t be afraid to fail – that’s the only way to learn.

You have to make a lot of decisions – small and big – every day and often you get the feedback right away. That is very rewarding.

What are you most excited about the project at the moment?

At the moment we are at very exciting times. The New York Fashion Tech Lab (nyftl.com) gives us the opportunity to meet senior managers of amazing fashion brands and it’s great to see their first reaction and feedback to the product. Also, we are actively fundraising at the moment and getting good investor interest, which is also very exciting.

On the product side, we have gathered enough data by now to see some historical business cycles and a few trends and can’t wait to analyze those more in depth.

What are the most difficult challenges of entrepreneurship?

For us, being such an international team, keeping everyone aligned and “in touch” is at times challenging but I think we master that well with our daily team video chats and feedback sessions.

In general there are good times and bad times and everything always happens slower than expected. It’s important to not lose your energy and vision in the low moments. Same is true for making your first dollar of revenue: it’s incredibly hard to sell a product in the market, especially in B2B. Also, finding and recruiting the right people at the beginning is probably the most challenging and important task of a startup. The idea can always be changed or adapted but to change the team is more difficult.

In your opinion, what are the most important personality traits to be a successful entrepreneur?

Have a vision and keep up your energy. Be able to convince people (partners/employees, customers, investors) of your idea. Be a team player. Have passion.

Is there anything you would go back and do differently if you had the chance?

Of course we made many wrong decisions. But I think that overall we are on a good track and you probably learn more from bad choices than from right ones, so I would not go back and change them.

What new understanding since you started has had the most impact on your original plan?

Our original plan was to build a social voting platform for upcoming fashion collections. We had invested months of work and some money to develop an alpha version of it, just to learn that there is actually no demand for it. It was a good learning that a) there is a huge difference between people liking your idea and the willingness to spend money for it and b) you need to listen very carefully what your potential customers say. We initially had interpreted most feedback in our favor (“rose lenses”) and missed the subtle critique points.

Fortunately, we could pivot the idea at a very early stage and without the interviews we would not have found the current opportunity that we are working on now.

What advice would you like to give to potential entrepreneurs?

Never, ever, run out of money! Find the right partners and people that believe in you and the idea. Validate your idea with potential customers as much as you can and listen to them carefully. Stay true to your vision, don’t give up and embrace learning from wrong decisions. Have fun!

Once more, the high level of the applications to the Incubator in Area 31 has made the job of the selection committee very difficult. We could only select 30% of the applicants. Thus, a big THANKS goes to the members of the selection committee (IE professors, mentors and investors in residence) for standing up to the challenge. We also thank all the applicants for their interest in growing their projects with us.
We’re looking forward to sharing the next 6 months with the new intake of startups in the Incubator in Area 31and we hope to see all the other teams at the multiple open events hosted in Area 31.
The teams that will join the fourth edition of the Startup Incubator in Area 31are:

They will be joined by selected teams from the third edition who, due to their achievements during their time in Area 31 and strong commitment to creating a strong network within Area 31, have been granted another 6 month stay in the incubator. Their role is to ensure the transmission of the culture of Area 31 on to the next edition. These top teams from the third edition are:

Meet the Startups in Area 31: Mingles

Escrito el 6 mayo 2014 por entrepreneurship en emprender

Mingles_collage_1920x1200

Andrés Pazos has been in Area 31 (IE, Madrid) for two consecutive calls. Originally he was selected for his startup Bidrink. This time around he is presenting mingles.es, which he has founded along with his two partners Amanda Wolffenbutel and his brother Gabriel Pazos. Mingles believes that the best way to improve language skills is through conversation practice. The concept is small conversation groups organized by levels and led by native speaking teachers. Sessions take place at trendy bars and cafes where you can speak while you enjoy a drink. All of it promoted and set up by an unique use of technology: mingles builds an online social network that comes to life offline.

Where did you get the idea?

Amanda, originally from San Francisco, is the mother of the idea. After teaching English in Madrid for quite some time, she realized that: 1) students needed a more dynamic way to learn and practice languages and 2) students always asked to go to a bar. So we’ve put the two together and came up with Mingles.

How does the business work?

Mingles offers a professional, social and flexible way to practice languages.

Whenever you feel like brushing up on a language in a social environment, all you have to do is go on to our web site (www.mingles.es) and find  a place and a time that works best for you and you are ready to mingle! Mingles brings you the experience of socializing and having fun while improving a language skills, all of this always guided by our native speaking teachers. You only need to sign up on our website (very soon with an APP) and have fun at your session.

What is the business model?

The business model is very simple; the students pay online 10 € for each Mingles’ experience and they are offered a drink on us. We also offer ONE to ONE sessions and passes with a 20% discount. Mingles wants to grow and become a “long tail” for language learning services.

What kinds of investors does the company have?

We have been in touch with different investors, but at the moment the founders of the company are funding Mingles. We want to make our startup grow before asking for bigger investment.

What is the stage of project now?

Mingles is running at six bars in Madrid, offering sessions everyday of the week, both in English and in Spanish. The business model has been validated and now we are testing how to grow. In June we will establish Mingles in Barcelona.

What role do the members play in the company?

Amanda is the director of studies, responsible for teachers and creator of the Mingles method. Gabriel is the CEO and project manager and Andrés is the CTO and business developer. But the reality of startups is that everybody has to work in different fields in order to make the project run.IMG_6009

What have you learned from your experience as entrepreneurs?

Creating your own company is an amazing experience, but you really have to believe in what you do. It requires a lot of work including weekends and holidays. Sometimes things do not work out as expected. As an entrepreneur you have to make a lot of decisions and I would say you learn something new every day.

What are you most excited about the project at the moment?

We are moving all the operations online and the project is starting to run on its own. We are very involved in the sharing economy movement and we want to be a reference for learning languages and become the “Airbnb of languages”.

What are the most difficult of entrepreneurship?

Being an entrepreneur and building your own business is not like working for a big company where you receive your salary every month. Things happen slower than you expect and sometimes you have to accept it, but you should never lose the energy and motivation that you need to run your business. It is very hard to get lots of people to like and appreciate your product, but when they do so, it is very rewarding

In your opinion, what are the most important personality traits to be a successful entrepreneur?

To be hardworking and persistent

Is there anything you would go back and do differently if you had the chance?

Of course many things could have been done differently. But now I would not change them because every single step and movement helps us grow, believe in, and improve our company.

What new understanding since you started has had the most impact on your original plan?

Our project is based on the experience and satisfaction of our students and teachers, so being able to listen to them everyday has helped us improve our service.

Our profit is based on volume of people; often times we want to grow providing more bars, more languages and more areas but it is very important to understand the needs of your business in terms of development and prioritize them.

What advice would you like to give to potential entrepreneurs?

Build a great team that believes in the startup as much as you do. It is important that all the team members be involved from the beginning. Find the balance between technology and marketing and run them at the right time together, one without the other does not make much sense. And, finally, keep working hard with passion and brain to make your ideas happen.

Interview Jeffrey Char – Venture Day 7th May

Escrito el 5 mayo 2014 por entrepreneurship en emprender

Jeffrey Char

Interview by Nir Hindi

Jeffrey Char is a serial entrepreneur and he will attend the coming Venture Day. You have an opportunity to hear him… here is what Jeffrey has to say about entrepreneurship:

Describe your biggest challenges or mistakes as entrepreneur?

Staying focused on the customer.  It is very simple, but difficult. I’m often too early and need to constantly remind myself to remain focused on solving the problem we set out to fix for our customers. Once the company starts up it is easy to get distracted with all the daily work issues and forget about the reason we started the company in the first place. As you scale up the team and the business it becomes increasingly difficult to remain focused on the customer.

Describe your greatest achievement as an entrepreneur?

To get up and keep going after repeated failures and being told no all the time.

What tips can you give to IE’s entrepreneurs?

Don’t start with a business idea. Find a meaningful problem to solve that you are passionate about solving. Figure out an innovative way to effectively solve the problem. Find like-minded people to join you in this adventure.  Start solving it today. Keep at it and don’t give up easily.

Jeffrey Char is a serial entrepreneur with a focus on social and tech ventures. He’s CEO of J-Seed, Tokyo based venture incubator and he’s also chief mentor at Venture Generation. Originally from Hawaii, Jeff has been a long-term resident of Japan. Prior to becoming an entrepreneur, Jeff worked as an attorney and investment banker.
