Barcelona gets a taste of the IE Venture Network!

Escrito el 26 abril 2013 por entrepreneurship en emprender

Last Thursday, the Catalan capital got a taste of the IE Venture Network! After a year of successful jam-packed pitch slams based in the Area 31 Valley, the IE Venture Network took its show to Barcelona. The event was hosted in ultrachic Dime Restaurant and was supported by Barcelona Activa, SeedRocket and Wayra. The beer-drinking crowd (thanks Heinken!) eagerly listened to pitches from international entrepreneurs based in Barcelona. The three start-ups represented were Dilunch (whose founder is a Parisian of Arab descent), Kantox (whose founder is also French) and Cognicor (whose founder is of Indian descent). The audience voted on the best pitch, which Cognicor won with 44% of the vote.

The idea to expand the IE Venture Network Day came as a result of its great success and the huge interest that it has generated so far. It is a unique forum in which start-ups can receive expert and audience feedback in a friendly setting. It is also a wonderful setting for scouting entrepreneurial talent, as many of the start-ups that have pitched have eventually entered Wayra and other accelerator programs.

Daniel Soriano, Director of the International Center for Entrepreneurial Management at IE Business School, hosted the event, which was universally judged by its audience to be a great success.

The opportunity to connect theory with practice is a key component of undergraduate education, particularly for students pursuing a Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) degree.  IE Universitystudents in Professor Rachida Justo’s “Social Entrepreneurship” class have benefitted from this hands-on experience through a course focused on pro-bono consulting work.  The objective is that students end up having a well-rounded knowledge of the issues faced by social entrepreneurs.

For three months, more than 20 BBA students have been working in small teams with clients of a Madrid-based incubator called UEIA: The firstEuropean accelerator for technology-basedsocial projects. This initiative hasarisen from the need of what the third sector is facing, which is currently in a time of change and requires reinvention towards future sustainability.

The IE University course includes both related classroom work and frequent communication (via email, conferencing and onsite visits) to shape a viable consulting project addressing a specific area of organizational need.

“For an undergraduate student studying business, the opportunity to work with a social enterprise for three months can be quite eye-opening,” said Rachida Justo, who also teaches entrepreneurship in IE’sMBAand Executive Educationprograms.  “And not only have these students gained valuable experience but they’ve made real impact.  In fact, the social enterprises have responded as enthusiastically as the students and many have already begun to implement ideas generated by the students. It shows how beneficial a diverse working environment can be for entrepreneurship activity.”

Last Monday, in the final session of the course, each team of BBA students presented the culmination of the work to their clients at the UEIA headquarters

During this particular program, the BBA students are working with the following five social enterprises associated with UEIA:

  1. Afables:the first social service that recommends help at home. Help for people who experience personal and family dependence, giving them the opportunity to choose from a website the best expert qualified to help with their needs, based on ratings, reviews and recommendations from other users. www.afables.com
  2. Cien-pies:city education for children between the ages of 4-11 years old. Coordinationvia web, with GPS tracking, to take children walking to school, guided by professionals. Meanwhile social education is being reinforced in a practical and amusing manner. www.cien-pies.es
  3. Creciclando:sharing platformthat encourages responsible drinking for parents with babies and children, and pregnant women. www.creciclando.com
  4. Trip-Drop:portal that incorporates solitary experiences when travelling in Spain and around the world. Publishes needs of different centres in the world, so that travellers and neighbours can personally meet them. www.trip-drop.com

PAINTING SUCCESS (MATT SHOUP)

Wednesday, April 24th – 19h
IE Business School, C/ María Molina 4, Aula E-108

In 2004 Matt Shoup was living the american way of life: just graduated from the university, recently married and up to his neck with studies and mortgage debts. But he was not scared. «I am going to take a safe job at a bank» he thought, and so he did. In March 2005 that bank fired Matt and he suddenly found himself unemployed, lacking a salary and without a single dollar in his pocket whilst he owed more than 100,000 dollars in credits. At that moment Matt founded M&E Painting with the last 100 dollars that he had in his wallet. Since then Matt has grown M&E Painting until making it the biggest, most recognized and successful company of North Colorado. With more than 12 million dollars in revenue during the last 8 years, and several awards for creating a triving workplace. Matt is today considered as one of the most influential entrepreneurs of Colorado and the USA.

At the talk «Painting success» Matt will share and discuss advices about his vision for creating and expanding a painting company, starting for zero, on an industry that is not cool, looks bad, employs poorly qualified manpower y strongly depends on the word of mouth and recognition of its customers.

Three Area 31 Teams among the winners of 2020 for 2020 Startup Madrid

Escrito el 15 abril 2013 por entrepreneurship en emprender

Winners of 2020 for 2020 Startup MAdrid

After coming very close in its most recent attempt to become an Olympic capital, Madrid has decided to add a bit of “entrepreneurial innovation” to its bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, and 3 of Area 31´s Alumni Startup Incubator teams will be part of the process!

More specifically, Madrid’s City Hall, through its network “Madrid Emprende”, is supporting the program “2020 for 2020 Startup Madrid”. One of the main objectives of this program is to support high-potential entrepreneurs that can help Madrid to become even more international by realizing their ideas while creating social impact through their businesses.

On 12 April 2013, the evaluation committee for “2020 for 2020 Startup Madrid” sorted through 150 projects to selected 12 winners. A full 25% of the winners are teams from Area 31’s Alumni Startup Incubator. Congratulations to camare.ro, Pathfinder and Top Around!

We are sure that these are just the first of what will likely be many future victories and celebrations of IE’s entrepreneurial talent!
